2006 Audit

We have helped Anna.

Seventy-nine- year-old Anna, a widow, has lived in her home for 45 years.  She has no family in the area and keeps to herself, afraid of the deteriorating conditions in her once pleasant neighborhood.  Anna was suspicious that anyone would do anything for her without expecting something in return. Friendly concern and persistence softened Anna’s resistance to our volunteers.

Concerns included no hot water at the bathroom sink, drainage problems and a toilet that did not work. Plumbers provided repairs to the bathroom, donating 20 hours of service, valued at $1,200.

There was an inadequate fuse box, requiring a service change, inadequate lighting inside and none outside. Journeymen electricians worked for 36 hours at a value at $2,160.

Additional repairs included rebuilding a portion of the porch roof, assisting in thorough cleaning, caulking windows, replacing hardware and locks on exterior doors, trimming hedges, cleaning her yard, and painting exterior trim and the interior of the home. Most importantly, volunteers assisted Anna in applying for further assistance from Franklin County Agency on Aging, providing ongoing care.

A phone call from a very different Anna to our director a week after our event shows how much one day can make a lifetime of difference.  She expressed her thanks, wondering aloud at how much “those people did for me, just because I needed help”.
